Flying Fifteen Open Meeting

Incorporating Classic & Silver Inland Championship

The second event of 2016 Southern Traveller Series was sailed over the weekend 25/26 June on the beautiful Llangorse Lake set in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The entry was 21 boats – 7 Classic, 8 Silver and 7 Open – with 12 visitors from a wide area stretching from Cornwall to Essex. The entries were split into two fleets – Classics and Silver + Open.

On Saturday three races were sailed back-to-back in a moderate wind under a grey sky, with serious gusts creating planing opportunities towards the end of the afternoon. The Race Officer set courses with a long beat up the main axis of the lake followed by a series of spinnaker reaches and gybes back to the leeward mark.

Llangorse 2016 C

Race 1 for the Open & Silvers was a close contest between an Open boat Keith Harris (4035) and a Silver Jacquie Layton (2880) hotly pursued by another Silver Alex Tatlow (3288)

Open Results Keith Harris 4035, Russell Abrahams 3820 and 3rd Bill Anderson 3453

Silver results Jacquie Layton (2880), Alex Tatlow (3288) and 3rd Derek Harrison (3359)

The Classics were closely contested by two old rivals David Morgan (2663). Mark Greer (2433). 3rd was Llangorse Commodore Colin Fletcher (2900) in his newly acquired boat and new sails

Race 2 The wind increased with some big gusts which built during the afternoon.

The Open & Silvers were too keen for this start resulting in a general recall.

The Open fleet was between the same 3 boats but this time Russell Abrahams (3820) got the better of Keith Harris (4035) with Bill Anderson (3453) in 3rd

Silvers had a change at the front with local boats getting 1 and 2 with Andy Hough (3040) and Ben Williams (3378) with Derek Harrison (3359) from South Cerney 3rd.

Classics was the same 3 boats with a change of order. Morgan, Greer and Fletcher

Race 3. The wind now has some serious gusts which resulted in a few flat boats on the spinnaker gybes.

Open. The usual 1,2,& 3 of Harris, Abrahams & Anderson.

Silver this was won by Ben Williams (3288) followed by a very well sailed South Cerney boat of Dean Hall (2811) with Derek Harrison (3359) 3rd

In the Classics it was the same as race 2 Morgan, Greer & Fletcher.

The evening was a split with some staying for a meal in the new club house and some at the pub or both
On Sunday the wind was much lighter than Saturday and allowed courses to be set which used the full length of the lake.

Race 4 on Sunday was for the Simon Dangerfield Memorial Trophies. (By tradition it had to be windward & leeward – Simon could only remember a total of 3 marks on a Sunday morning!)

Open Fleet. Bill Anderson lead from the start and kept the 2 Chew boats behind. Russell Abrahams played the shifts down- wind to kept ahead of Keith Harris

Silver. This was a contest with 3 local boats Layton. Hough and Card. Places changed more than a few time both on the beat and run. It was Andy Hough (3040) who played the final run to win followed by Jacquie Layton(2880) and Peter Card (3144)

Classic Again a good contest with the usual 3 with some nervous crews on spinnakers as the wing began to die. Result 2663,2900,2433

Race 5 Race officer Robert Dangerfield set a similar course to Saturday, with a variable wind both in strength and direction.

Open. With all to play for between 3820 & 4035 it was 3820and made the most of the Llangorse wind and rain. The highlight was the committee boat racing the length of the lake to get to the windward mark for the shortened course. (Just made it he told us afterwards) Result 3820,4035.3453

Silver Again a bit of a lottery but the usual culprits made their luck 1st Williams, Harrison and in 3rd ex local boat of David Travis (3006)

Classic. The old lady of Llangorse (55) Jeremy& Katherine Soulsby showed the way to do it and finished nearly 4mins in front of 2nd Richard Taylor (2626) with Mark Greer(2433) 3rd

The racing finished with very little wind but it was close to the Club house

Thanks to our Race Officer and his team Robert Dangerfield
