Southern Travellers at Broxbourne…. !!

Report of the 2nd round of the 2015 Southern Traveller Series, sailed at Broxbourne SC over the weekend 6/7 June.

The eleven competitors – 5 Classics, 1 Silver and 5 Opens – were greeted by a strong breeze, varying south west to west, with some heavy gusts adding to the excitement of the racing.   In the first race visitors Mark Greer and Jim Read (2433) led the fleet with locals Pip Hudson and Jane Howe (3681) second and visitors Neil Bartholomey and Emma Brown (2700) third. These three continued to dominate the second and third races, with switches in the finishing order.

At the end of the day’s racing the fleet came ashore to rest, relax and enjoy a delicious supper prepared by club members in the galley, with lots of discussion about the challenging conditions.

Sunday dawned with an entirely different wind, a fickle north westerly with windless patches to catch the unwary. This change in the wind also resulted in a reshuffle at the front of the fleet with Bob Tait and Mick Musgrove (2606) finishing first and second in the two races sailed. However, this strong performance was not enough to dislodge the three boats which had sailed so consistently on the Saturday and the overall winners were:

1st Mark Greer and Jim Read (2433) from Middle Nene SC

2nd Pip Hudson and Jane Howe (3681), Broxbourne SC

3rd Neil Bartholomey and Emma Brown (2700), Middle Nene SC

The third event in the Southern Traveller Series will be sailed on 5/6 September at South Cerney SC located on a large lake in the Cotswold Water Park near Cirencester, Glos, with easy access from the M4 and M5.
