The WWNT Dovestone Open ……!!

Flying Fifteens at Dovestone

DSC_6674Dovestone Sailing Club, near Manchester, hosted their Flying Fifteen Open Meeting over the weekend of the 5th and 6th October. The weather was warm and gave possibly the last opportunity to sail in shorts this year. The wind on Saturday wasn’t so supportive; a fickle and fragile force 2 nudged across the moor and swooped across the reservoir. Three races were sailed on Saturday and produced close competition throughout the fleet as the changeable conditions ensured all had to keep on their toes. The three newest boats sailed by Justin Waples/Ralph Smith, Arthur and Angie George and Graham Massey/Lucy Clough were always close to the action at the front, crossing tacks regularly as they picked their way up the beats in the shifty wind.  Dave Naylor/Norman Christie, in their classic boat, also found some good shifts and sailed well taking a 2nd in Race 2. During Race 3 the wind started to fade and the long run down the length of the reservoir kept the fleet guessing as the pressure fluctuated from side to side. Mick Hampson and Nick Maddison sailed their best race of the weekend taking a 3rd place.

In the evening the fleet were treated to an entertaining and educational wine tasting givenWaples Wines Boat logo by Justin of Waples Wines, the series sponsor, which was then followed by a meal and a good deal of convivial conversation.

On Sunday the day was even better with plenty of sunshine and warmth and a stronger wind more from the south flowing over the hill and down the valley. The racing was again close with the classic and silvers jostling for advantage around the marks. David Naylor and Norman started well and lead the fourth race for a lap and a half before being overhauled by the newer boats. Arthur George stealthily sailed his way to the front again and pipped Justin Waples on the line to win the first race as he had on Saturday. The final race was lead from start to finish by David and Sally McKee in a Silver boat.

DSC_6687Justin Waples/Ralph Smith completed a 2, 2 to clinch the Open, discarding a 3rd. Arthur/Angie George were 2nd overall and Graham Massey/Lucy Clough were 3rd. Dave Naylor/Norman Christie were 4th and first Classic.
