Round two of the Waples Wines Northern Travellers 2013 series took place at Ogston Sailing Club on 15th & 16th June. The event attracted 9 Flying Fifteens including 1 silver boat and 1 classic, in a weekend which encompassed Father Day, (causing several guilt ridden absences) including a visitor from Loch Lomond!
Saturday saw fantastic conditions for Flying Fifteens with a steady breeze of 13-15 knots boosted by some cheeky gusts of 18-20knots.
The five race event was dominated from the first by Andy Goddard & Mal Hartland from Dovestone SC who, having arrived late, and using a boat kindly loaned to them by Dave McKee, gave the fleet a sporting chance by still being on the jetty at the 1 minute signal! Four laps later they assumed the lead from Jon & Julia Ward sailing at their home club, and won the race.
The wind stayed for races 2 & 3 which saw good downwind legs with plenty of spinnakers flying and fun at the gybe marks, the odd gust and hole caught out various sailors not least Dave Driffill from Ogston who after falling out of his boat twice in one day was a clear winner of the ‘Waples Wally’ Magnum of wine!
Sunday brought much lighter conditions and the fleet enjoyed the best winds of the day by starting at 11.00am. Racing was like a game of snakes and ladders with the leaders being passed by half the fleet at times on various legs of the very shifty course. Andy & Mal retired after winning race four, with an unbeatable scorecard leaving the rest of the fleet to do their best for position. The final race saw some very nifty boat handling and wind spotting from the father and son team of Malcolm & Elliott Hall from Burton SC sailing their Silver Fleet boat to secure third place overall, from Jon & Julia Ward of Ogston SC who finished second overall.
